Renaldo Powell, better known as R.I.P, is a hip-hop artist based out of Detroit Michigan. He got his start at the young age of eleven, through a shared interest in music with friends and as early as middle school had begun to write and record his own music, creating short rap videos in his basement, and soon moving on to put together a rap group which he continued to make music in through the end of his high school career. Born in the city of Detroit, which he now calls his home-base, R.I.P came from a family that struggled to support a large number of children, and was adopted at the age of five, moving from Detroit, Michigan to Wayne, Michigan, where he grew up.
R.I.P’s music has grown along with him over time, and his work contains an important message with which he hopes to inspire others. That message is a strong one of self-improvement, and he believes in chasing your dreams and works to motivate others to recognize their potential and work towards their goals. He lives by the quote, “as long as you have breath, you have opportunity.” He takes this to mean that the only thing that can stop you in life from achieving your goals is death. As long as you are alive, you are able to continue to strive for everything that you want, and once you believe in this principle wholeheartedly and learn to run with it, you can achieve more than you ever imagined. This belief is what is at the heart of R.I.P’s brand, and at the core of his music.
While he is working hard to progress his musical career, he hopes to convey his artistry and love of the rap and the hip-hop genre to his audience, inspiring them, and hopes to be able to reach people and make an impact on their lives. He hopes to motivate others to find value in their lives. With so many people going about the motions of everyday life as if they were a zombie, not really paying attention to the world around them, he hopes to break that mold and help people to realize that simply chasing another paycheck and following the order of society is not a way to truly live—that life itself is worth so much more than that.
His music, within the hip-hop vein is of a lyrical rap style, influenced by artists such as Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Joyner Lucas, and J. Cole among others. Recently he has hosted a release party for his latest project, “Pocket Watch EP” at HopCat in midtown Detroit, and while he doesn’t yet have any details on future shows or collaborations, he always has projects in the works and is always generating new ideas and music.
His latest music can be found on platforms such as Tidal, Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, SoundCloud, Google Play Music, and on other major online stores, and he encourages anyone interested in his sound or his vision of inspiration to check out his work.
Why the name "R.I.P"?
"Most people think the name R.I.P is an acronym but it's not. It's my reminder. My reminder that every day of my life is another day closer to my death. Most people choose not to think about death because they see it as a reason to be worried or sad. I see it as a reason to be efficient and focused every single day. Death is nothing but a deadline for you to complete all you've set out to do in life.
When you die, your legacy is solidified. There is nothing more you can do to change how you will be remembered. But unlike school deadlines where I could procrastinate until the last minute; I have no idea when I will be called due. That uncertainty is the reason behind my sense of urgency. I can't waste time because I don't know if I have any time to waste. The only thing I know for sure is that you WILL Remember my name when I R.I.P."
